ABOUT KAYLIE

I started snowboarding when I was 8 years old at Holimont Ski Club in Ellicottville, NY. After skiing since I was 2, I decided I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps and become a snowboarder. I immediately fell in love with the sport and quickly convinced my dad that I wanted to switch from the ski racing program to the snowboard racing team. On a team of about 20 riders, my 2 friends and I were the youngest. We idolized each of the older racers.

After my first race, I realized snowboarding was something I was really passionate about. From age 9 to age 14, we were ‘weekend warriors’, training almost every weekend at Holimont and competing on the Snowboard Ontario circuit and the USASA circuit. We finished every season with a trip to the USASA nationals in Copper Mountain, Colorado. In 2013, I won double gold in GS and SL at this event. This is when I first realized my dream of taking snowboarding to the highest level.

When I turned 15, snowboarding became my biggest passion. I became eligible to race FIS and began travelling to NorAm events and FIS races to be introduced to the next level of snowboard racing. I was eager and excited to be racing against North America’s best riders and knew this is where I belonged. In the summer of 2016, I began training with Patrik Gaudet in El Colorado, Chile where I progressed immensely over the course of a 3 week training camp.

Early in the winter season, I travelled to Minnesota, Quebec and Colorado for the first NorAm races of the season. At these races I achieved my first 3 of 7 NorAm podium results of the year. With these results, I qualified for my first World Cup race in Bulgaria at age 16. In just one season I stepped up from competing against North America’s best, to the World’s best.

After my first experience on the world stage, I returned home for more NorAm races where I earned 2 more podiums before returning to Europe for the Junior World Championships. It was my first time at this event where I was competing against international racers aged 15-19. Racing on my 17th Birthday, I finished 6th, the best result by a Canadian woman in our discipline in 10 years. I spent the next month training and competing at Europa- Cup events as well as the next World Cup in Turkey. In Turkey, I finished 30th, another headlining result for the season. I returned home to finish the competitive season at the USA nationals earning another NorAm podium result. I also attended the Canadian National Championships where I finish 4th in the senior event and became the Junior National Champion.

From these results, I achieved 3rd place overall on the NorAm tour, earning myself a personal World Cup spot for the 2017-18 season as well as a spot on the Canadian National Team. In just my first 8 years of snowboarding I have had huge opportunities I never thought I would have experienced by age 17. Coming off a breakthrough season moving forward into this Olympic year, I am pushing myself continue my successes into this season. I will be competing on the World Cup circuit, Europa Cup circuit and the NorAm circuit, to achieve the results I need to qualify for the upcoming 2018 Olympic Winter Games. This year, on the NorAm tour my goal is to become the 2018 champion, and at the 2018 Junior World Championships, I am aiming for a podium finish. I am looking forward to continuing to push my limits for many years to come, chasing my ultimate goal of one day becoming the worlds best.
